GROW WITH WIGGLY

Grow with Wiggly - HEADER.png

Project Grow are teaming up with Wiggly Charity and the Gloucestershire Heritage Hub taking over the Hubs existing community garden.  The aim is to grow 50% of the vegetables used in Wiggly’s cookery courses as well as for the community of Kingsholm.  We are working to prove the case for a more sustainable community food system growing chemical free plants and produce with low food miles (less than 0.5miles from Hub to kitchen) and all delivered with minimal packaging and waste.

To ensure the Kingsholm community benefits from the growing space, its plants and produce we will be working with the Heritage Hub running events and workshops to promote the project and its availability for people to access. We will also be looking to recruit volunteers to help run the growing space, harvest, and deliver produce to the Wiggly Kitchen.  We will be launching to the community on May 4th 2024 where we will be talking about the project and its intended impact and Wiggly will be cooking up food for the community to enjoy.

We launched the project in Febraury 2024 and will be posting monthly updates on the project below. To be involved please email us at hello@weareprojectgrow.com

To celebrate our 8th week of being on site we planted our new cabbage beds amongst the flowers, filled in any gaps in our lettuce and salad beds and planted more peas!

APRIL

We cannot believe its April already......our month started off by installing Vegtrug number three.....we will be installing four in total which will become our rotating salad bars throughout the spring and summer months.  Planting lettuces, salad leaves, wild rocket, spinach, spring onions, beetroots and radishes - harvesting every week and sowing more every two weeks.  We also inter-planted our carrots in the established onion bed and potted on our seedlings that are packed into our polytunnel.

CCP GARDENING CLUB

In the spirit of turning the space into a true community garden we have teamed up with CCP to run our very first gardening club. Being a completely new group we did not know what to expect and what a turnout! We had over 15 people including CCP staff come along and boy did they get stuck in.  The team removed all the remaining box hedge that had been destroyed by the box caterpillar and disposed of it and then started to dig out a trench for a new bed in its place.  They sowed seeds for the #RHSGrowwithit campaign, potted on a million cabbages, cornflowers and herbs as well as planted out our fourth salad bed.

Our new gardening group will feature monthly at the Community Garden, for more details on this cross partnership working please contact us at hello@weareprojectgrow.com

MAY

More milestones in May with our first harvest for Wiggly Charity and the installation of our new polytunnel thanks to funding from the Greener Gloucestershire Fund.  Our site build is almost complete and we now turn our attentions to rolling out a program of sowing, planting rotation, harvesting and maintenance (mainly weeding and watering).

JUNE

The harvests keep on coming and we are now in a rhythm harvesting every Tuesday for Wiggly.  The spring vegetables are still coming with us succession sowing every two weeks for lettuces, salads, rocket and radishes and monthly planting of carrots and potatos.  Our summer and some autumn plants have also been planted out now the soil is warmer including tomato's, cucumbers, leeks, parsnips and cabbages. For two weeks we also harvested for Roots Community Cafe as Wiggly's courses were not running due to staff holidays.
